SEC tests Mac Pro Nehalem with Pro Tools HD: Absurdly Fast
After our initial tests with the new Mac Pro 8-core “Nehalem”, we’re happy to report that the new machine is extremely fast and even quieter than the last generation. Running Pro Tools HD 8.0cs2 with HD3 Accel, we enjoyed super fluent workflow, great graphics speed - even with center playhead - and absurdly fast RTAS performance.
Thanks to the Xeon Hyper-Threading, the 8 cores show up as 16 logical processors in Pro Tools contributing tremendously to the processing speed: in a not-quite-real-world-oriented test we were able to run 500 D-Verbs simultaneously while happily recording on 60 audio tracks. Yes, that was five-oh-oh simultaneous reverbs.
But don't try this at home as the Nehalem generation is not yet supported by Digidesign. Stay tuned to this page to find out when Pro Tools is qualified for the new speed king.

Apple unveils new Mac Pro
The new Mac Pro in the first desktop computer to use the new Intel "Nehalem" Xeon single-die, 64-bit 4-core processors with integrated memory control and fully shared cache on the chip.
It will be available as singe chip (4-core) and two chip (8-core) configurations. The new Mac Pro introduces a cool new Turbo Boost: a dynamic performance technology that automatically boosts the processor clock speed based on workload. If you’re using an application that doesn’t need every core, Turbo Boost shuts off the idle cores while simultaneously increasing the speed of the active cores. The new Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processors also support Hyper-Threading, which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core. So an 8-core Mac Pro presents 16 virtual cores that are recognized by Mac OS X. Call us for more info.

Apple introduces new Mac Mini
The new Mac Mini sports Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2.0 or 2.26GHz, SATA harddisk from 120 to 320GB and support for two simultaneous displays through Mini DVI and Mini Display Ports. The big news is up to five times faster graphics, thanks to Nvidia GeForce 9400M processor. Mac Mini has now 5 USB 2.0 ports and as all new Macs, FireWire 400 is dropped for FireWire 800. Memory is now upgradeable up to 4GB and the wireless connections are boosted to WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

The new iMacs offer more speed and capacity for less money.
The 24” speeds start now at 2.66GHz and go up to 3.06GHz, with only one 20”, 2.66GHz model left. The new iMacs come now with 320GB to 1TB hard drives and Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics, upgradeable up to ATI Radeon HD 4850. Maximum RAM has been doubled to 8GB. The FireWire 400 port is gone, replaced by fourth USB 2.0 port and the FireWire 800 is supported over one port. You can now choose between Apple aluminum keyboard with or without numeric keypad for the same price.

Neyrinck SoundCode for Dolby E beta available
You can now download a preview beta version of the forthcoming Neyrinck SoundCode for Dolby E plug-in and standalone application. With Neyrinck SoundCode for Dolby E you can encode and decode multichannel broadcast wave (MBWF) files with embedded Dolby metadata. Dolby E was developed by Dolby Laboratories to carry eight channels of audio and metadata on digital videotapes or AES cables using two channels of PCM audio. Dolby E is also being used to deliver audio in file-based workflows.

Don't get confused - this is not multi-band compression. D4 is an entirely different beast. Why always apply the same compression to all audio levels? New FIREQ from RNDigital
The new FIREQ is a 62 band stereo finite impulse response (FIR) linear phase mastering EQ. With the built in frequency analyzer you can view the audio, and see real time changes as you adjust the filters. One of the coolest features is FIREQ’s match feature which learns the spectral characteristics of the audio source and lets you to apply it to other material. McDSP announced the new Retro Pack plug-in line, styled and designed for the ultimate vintage vibe. The Retro Pack Bundle includes the 4020 Retro EQ, the 4030 Retro Compressor and the 4040 Retro Limiter.
The 4020 Retro EQ is a four-band EQ plus filters. The HF and LF bands are shelving, with two additional HMF and LMF parametric EQs. The 4030 Retro Compressor is a new dynamic range tool with a wet/dry mix control (cool!). An active attack and release design allows aggressive compression settings with minimal artifact generation. The 4040 Retro Limiter combines a look-ahead brick wall limiter with special treatments to make the limiting subtle, yet vintage. The Retro Pack will ship this spring, stay tuned.

The Waves Dorrough Meter Collection brings you precision models of the standard in loudness meters in the US. The Dorrough Meter Collection lets you see both average and peak levels in a single readout directly on the screen.
UM225 and 226 stereo-to-surround processors spread a stereo signal to a 5.1 soundscape when the original multitrack sessions are not available.
Waves Center solves many age-old problems of audio production like how to remove vocals from a mixed material, control the center/sides balance, control the ambience of stereo recordings etc.

The new D-Command Producerﾒs Desk solves the usual space problem of where to go with keyboard, mouse, notepad, remotes, etc. It includes a Digidesign Custom Keyboard which can be configured for Windows and Mac and a plate for mouse or trackball which can be switched for left or right handed use.

Digidesign announces Pro Tools 8
Pro Tools 8 has been completely updated with a new user interface, dozens of new bundled plug-ins (including five new virtual instruments and 20 effects), fully integrated MIDI and score editors, and expanded editing features. The user interface is enhanced with a more modern color palette and higher-contrast text and graphics, yet the key functions users rely on are still right where they should be, while enhancements - such as dockable Editor windows and a configurable Edit Window toolbar - make it easier to navigate than ever.
Pro Tools 8 software will be available in late 2008 for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), Windows Vista (32-bit Business or Ultimate) and Windows XP-based Pro Tools HD, Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered systems.
