Leopard ships
In case you were on a holiday on another planet you might have not heard that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is officially out since last Friday. We’ve been fooling around with it for almost a week on few Macs and yes, it’s positively cool and no, it’s not Pro Tools compatible yet. Digidesign has however been working hard on a Leopard compatibility and now that the golden version is out, we’re expecting more info in the next weeks about Leopard-compatible versions of Pro Tools HD, LE and M-Powered. Stay tuned.

IBC 2007 busy as ever

New Roger Nichols Digital SPL-IZER
Roger Nichols Digital RND announced a completely new kind of plug-in, Spl-izer. Spl-izer splices your signal 24dB/oct. in three frequency bands without phase shifting with high-quality FIR filters.
Now, why would you do that? Beyond the obvious use of magically turning your favorite dynamics processor to a multiband unit, you can apply slightly different flavor of effects to each band, allowing much more focused use of your tools and cleaner overall sound. For example vocal reverb: No reverb on the low end, the original reverb on the mid section and the same reverb but with reduced decay on the high end. Or run acoustic rhythm guitar track through the Spl-izer: low end muted, mid section straight through and a short echo/ chorus only on the high end. Or vocal delay: Split lead vocal into high and low frequencies, then add delay only to the higher frequencies. Thus the sibilant-rich sounds have echo, while the lower notes do not. This way you can avoid muddying up the midrange - the vocal echoes "float" over the other sounds.

Phonoplay chose Digidesign ICON for the tight hardware/software integration, unbeatable price/performance ratio and compete recall which is very important for Phonoplay’s type of work where a production can span over months or even years. Being able to recall all audio, effects and even the large-format console automation with a double-click has already revolutionised Phonoplay’s workflow speed. Pink Bild und Ton upgrades to Pro Tools HD
Legendary Pink Bild und Ton (Krokus, Gotthard, Polo Hofer) upgraded their Pro Tools Mix to a brand new Pro Tools HD with dozens of plug-ins from TL, Digidesign, Bomb Factory, Line 6, Waves, etc., as well as massive 1.25TB of Glyph storage.
Pink offers also video production and audio/video post services so the new system had to be able to handle both music and post work. As a Pro Tools user since the ‘90’s, it was clear to Pink’s owner Jürg Naegeli that only Pro Tools HD can do the job. “The sheer speed was the first thing that amazed me” told Jürg and said he’s looking forward to dig into the hundreds of new features of HD during next productions. There has been talk if Pro Tools sounds different, better or worse than a large format analog console. Well, now you can decide yourself.
