Digidesign RM2 ready for your ears in SEC showroom The first impressions were surprisingly positive - when it comes to new monitors, we’re always more than sceptic. RM2s pack an incredible punch for the size and can be driven on a very high SPL levels, competing near the league of our built-in main monitors, Genelec 1038s. Also the 48bit double precision DSP must have brought something fresh in the game since these speakers sounded way better than any nearfield PMCs we’ve heard. The RM2s were also clearly less fatiguing than our up-to-now standard nearfields and therfore very easy to mix on. Full house at TTS event in Baden After a lively discussion, the panel came to the conclusion that sound engineers are indeed valuable in making records, film and broadcast to happen - even when hardware has became affordable to every musician. Anybody with Pro Tools LE and a laptop has more technical possibilities than Beatles could ever dream of - but the old truth is that buying (even a lefty) Stratocaster doesn’t make you a Hendrix. And a laptop doesn’t quite cut it in a professional environment either - it was nice to notice that all panel guests earn their daily bread by working on Pro Tools HD systems from us. Roger Nichols Master Class rocks Roger talked mostly about mixing, using mouth-watering multitrack examples from Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan etc. Many other topics got discussed as well like miking, how to find a good spot for an instrument in the studio, headphone mix, dithering, compressing, EQ, MP3/AAC quality, analog vs. digital, mix in the box vs. console, etc. All in all a truly thrilling day which was over way too fast. We hope to have Roger over again, hopefully already next year for a recording workshop with hands-on clinic including setup, miking, recording and mixing of an entire session - the first time only got us hungry for more. New Digidesign RMS Active Monitors The Digidesign RMS monitors use a 48-bit, fixed-point DSP engine for various tasks including EQ settings, trim level, the unique Bass Port Emulation, and two-way digital crossover with steep filters that ensure virtually zero phase shift. Each driver is powered by an analog-controlled Class D amplifier, which can sense the loudspeaker voltage directly and provide an accurate frequency response regardless of the reactive load presented by the transducers. Amplifier performance is further enhanced with a linear power supply, which provides two times the peak current headroom and better noise isolation than switch mode designs.
