Digidesign Training Hit at IBC

Digidesign's free training was a hit at IBC, Amsterdam. At the training sessions participants were able to learn how to manipulate audio to picture including creating and spotting sound effects, editing music, mixing a session and using real time plug-ins. As IBC is mostly about video and broadcast, the training sessions provided a welcome chance for the video people to have a look at the audio side of post production.

We always tell clients how important training is to gain the most of their systems. Obviously this is true for us as well so we get trained regularly at Digidesign to be able to offer the best possible support.

New Sony Oxford Limiter available

A new addition to the Sony Oxford plug-in family, the Oxford Limiter is a very high quality programme limiter, with a unique 'Enhance' control and comprehensive metering.

Unique processing in the form of the Enhance function provides the sample value limiting needed to reliably avoid overloads in digital workstation environments and allows unprecedented volume and punch to be applied to programme beyond that available from conventional limiting functions.

Comprehensive metering is provided which displays not only conventional peak sample value, but additionally allows the user to monitor the true validity of the programme in order to avoid the generation of damaging reconstruction overloads in the target equipment which are often invisible during production (sometimes termed 'inter sample peaks').

A further function allows the user to dynamically correct for reconstruction overloads in real time, thereby achieving maximum possible modulation levels without the risks of producing illegal signals often associated with compression and limiting.

We already did some initial testing against other limiters and have to admit that the Oxford Limiter really shines. Specially demanding classical music sounds much cleaner than with other widely used comparable products. But no names here... Pro Tools HD now Tiger Compatible

Digidesign has released free Pro Tools TDM v6.9.2 upgrade for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and new April 05 Power Macs (G5 2.0, 2.3 and 2.7GHz).

Pro Tools TDM 6.9.2 is a free download for all Pro Tools|HD and Pro Tools|HD Accel owners with Pro Tools TDM 6.4 or higher software. Pro Tools 6.9 must be installed first in order to use the Pro Tools 6.9.2 Updater.

6.9.2 is for Tiger ONLY - don't use it with Panther (Mac OS X 10.3).

John McKay (Lord Of The Rings, senior sound editor) in Zürich

John McKay visited recently several SEC post clients in Zürich. During his stay John showed his Virtual Katy workflow solution which enabes totally new possibilities to audio post. As the sound post crew doesn't have to wait for the final version of the picture, they can start with the creative work much earlier in the project timeline and do time- and nerve consuming resynchronisation automatically in few minutes instead of hours or days.

John's impressive list of credits include temp mixer/senior sound editor on the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. The concept for Virtual Katy was born during his efforts on the 'Lord Of The Rings, Fellowship of the Ring' film.

The massive production went through 50 plus version changes before completion. Scrambling to keep up with the rapidly changing picture edit became the main focus for the LOTR sound team. Creative sound track production became secondary to keeping the movie in sync. To overcome these challenges, McKay designed sound automation tools and workflows that automate the time consuming updates and resync sessions.

Virtual Katy finds and compares the differences between two or more versions of a picture edit, then non-destructively re-compiles a Pro Tools session to reflect the changes. Recompiling a session with Virtual Katy takes a fraction of the time it would take to process the changes manually.

By removing this postproduction bottleneck, sound designers and editors can regain creative time from the purely mechanical process of re-syncing - even in the most deadline driven environments. Considering the Lord of the Rings films were some of the most demanding sound post production projects ever, Virtual Katy has passed the real life test with flying colors.

ICON D-Command released at NAB

The Digidesign D-Command tactile worksurface is the newest member of the ICON family. As with the flagship large-format ICON D-Control console, D-Command utilizes Pro Tools|HD Accel as its DSP mix engine and Pro Tools|HD interfaces and peripherals for system I/O. With D-Command, you have hands-on command over every aspect of a Pro Tools project, including recording, editing, mixing, and processing - with integrated video and delivery - from a relatively small, but expandable, worksurface.

Equipped with eight channel faders, D-Command is expandable to 24 faders by adding a single 16-channel Fader Module. Each channel strip features a touch-sensitive motorized fader, two multi-purpose rotary encoders, and multiple pushbuttons for quick access to key session parameters.

The ergonomic design of D-Command enables control through the channel strips and includes LCD display, LED ring, and bar-graph meters for visual feedback. D-Command's intuitive console layout includes a centralized Main Unit for fast access to essential functions. Dedicated EQ and dynamics editing panels, a monitoring section, and other commonly accessed controls are all within easy reach. Operators can customize fader controls and create custom track groups independent of how tracks are set up within Pro Tools.

To monitor projects, D-Command includes the XMON remote, rack-mounted, analog monitor and communications system. With XMON, operators can monitor separate, simultaneous 6-channel mixes (mono to 5.1 surround) as well as three external stereo sources.

Skipping Audio and/or Video with Apple Powerbooks

Skipping audio/video frames when using Apple's latest generation of 1.5 and 1.67 GHz Powerbooks can be caused by Apple incorporating a technology called "Sudden Motion Sensor". As a consequence both models have not been qualified with use with Pro Tools.

Free Digidesign EQIII for Pro Tools HD, LE and AVID systems

EQ III is a new high-resolution, double-precision 48-bit EQ plug-in available for Pro Tools® and Avid® systems. The latest addition to the DigiRack suite of free plug-ins, EQ III supports TDM, RTAS, and AudioSuite formats, and is available in 1-band, 4-band, and 7-band configurations for optimized CPU/DSP efficiency. In addition to the plug-in's fully parametric design, EQ III includes selectable shelving filters and settings as well as separate high-pass, low-pass, and variable Q notch filters.

EQ III TDM is only supported with Pro Tools|HD and Pro Tools|HD Accel systems running Pro Tools 6.7 or higher. EQ III is supported on Pro Tools LE systems with Pro Tools 6.7 or higher. EQ III supports also all Avid Xpress, Avid Xpress DV, and Avid DNA systems.

Basel City Studios:Two new Digidesign Pro Tools HD|3 Systems at work

SEC recently installed two Digidesign Pro Tools HD|3 systems for Basel City Studios.

Both systems have identical software and plug-ins so projects can switch rooms without a hitch. Studio 1 has 4 x 192 I/Os with additional AD and DA cards for total of 48ch/192KHz analog in/out. Studio 3 has 192 Digital I/O for 16ch digital in/out. Combined storage capacity is over 2TB (2000GB). Studio 1 has also Digidesign MIDI I/O and SYNC for syncing their VTRs, Studer and Otari 2" machines.

The PowerMac Dual 2GHz G5s are loaded with 1.5GB RAM and plug-ins from Sony Oxford, Focusrite, Fairchild, Joe Meek, Waves (Platinum), Massenburg, Serato (Pitch'n'Time), Antares (AutoTune), Aphex, Trillium Lane Labs (TL Space), Line 6, Eventide, McDSP, SoundToys, Digidesign etc.

SEC did the installation as turnkey package. All equipment was pre-installed and tested at SEC which meant only one day downtime for Basel City Studios with additional day of training done by our trusted freelancer Justin Fraser. Justin is a Digidesign certified instructor in addition to his extensive career as sound engineer and Pro Tools operator (Trevor Horn, Seal, Art of Noise etc).
