Glyph

Glyph offers serious storage for serious work. After testing countless solutions, we think that Glyph products offer the best price/performance ratio for local storage.

Most companies build external hard drives without a fan. That may be fine for office use but in heavy-duty cycles like audio and video production, your drive gets much hotter and has a higher likelihood of failing. To keep the drive mechanism cool and your data safe, Glyph uses whisper-quiet fans that produce no more than 20 dBA.

To further keep the noise floor down, Glyph uses unique Quiet Metal, a tri-laminate structure with two layers of metal separated by a polymer core. You'll notice the difference immediately by just knocking on the case, no cowbell sound here. The disk mechanism is also mounted to rubber isolators to dampen disk vibration before it reaches the chassis, thereby reducing the overall noise.

If you have connected a FireWire cable in the dark you might have seen small sparks. The reason is the external power adapter without proper grounding which can result in a zap that kills drive enclosure’s FireWire/ATA board. Or in the worst case, the motherboard of the computer. We’ve seen this happening too many times. Glyph uses properly grounded internal power supplies and standard IEC power connectors like other pro studio gear.

As Glyph has full confident in their products, they offer 3 year warranty. No expensive warranty extension necessary. Below you’ll find short selection of Glyph latest bestsellers, for additional SCSI, tape, portable and optical products visit: www.glyphtech.com

For professional studios that offer storage for their clients, we have a special "Glyph As Tape"-program with very special pricing. Call us for details.

Portagig SSD

Portagig SSD
The PortaGig SSD is designed for the highest speed possible, at the same time delivering high reliability, low power consumption and anti-shock features. Why wait for a traditional hard disk drive to spin up? With no moving parts on the solid state drive, it has near-instantaneous access time. Portagig SSD is available in 64GB, 128GB, and 192GB models.

In an audio environment, you'll experience a very high track count, even at high edit density. At SEC we tested the drive with Pro Tools HD and managed to achieve:

192 tracks playback at 44KHz
96 tracks playback at 96KHz
20 tracks recording + 172 tracks reading at 44KHz
36 tracks recording + 100 tracks reading at 96KHz

That's over 100 tracks higher than a standard firewire drive!

PortaGig SSD has a distinct advantage over standard 2.5” HDDs since it's made of solid-state memory and has no moving parts, and therefore eliminates the possibility of mechanical failure resulting from vibration, shock, and heat. This means the PortaGig SSD can operate reliably for more hours, in hotter environments, and under rougher conditions. No moving parts means also no noise and much less power needed for operation.

The Portagig SSD is bus powered over FW800 and USB 2.0. A power supply is included for connecting to low-power USB ports. As for the other Glyph products, there is a 3 Year Full Warranty, 2 Years of Free Level I Data Recovery, and 1 Year of Free Advance Replacement.

GT 205

GT 205
The GT 205 is Glyph's flagship system designed for the utmost in storage capacity, options and performance. Applications where multiple drives are needed, such as audio and video production, will benefit from having four GT Key drive bays and the expansion bay, which can house an AIT tape backup drive, SCSI or FireWire hot-swap receiving bay, DVD-R/RW or CD-R/RW.

The 2U enclosure features Glyph's integrity FireWire hot-swap interface, three internal power supplies and a near-silent fan. GT Key drives can be interchanged with the GT 051 tabletop and the GT 103 3-bay 1U enclosures. Focused on keeping your studio quiet, GT Keys incorporate sound-dampening metal in their frames. This composite metal technology absorbs drive vibration and reduces equipment noise. Glyph's GT 205 comes standard with a three-year warranty, while GT Keys carry an additional overnight advance replacement warranty in the first year.

GT 050Q

GT 050Q
The GT 050Q builds upon the success of the original GT 050 and adds FireWire 800, eSATA and USB ports. Designed for high-speed access to audio and video content, while at the same time offering flexible connectivity options, the GT 050Q is the highest performing Quad interface drive on the market today.

GT 050Q is constructed with durable stainless steel and uses tri-laminate sound-damping metal, which absorbs drive vibration before it can get to the chassis.

GT 062

GT 062
Glyph's GT 062 is a two drive tabletop designed for professional audio and video applications, and supports three drive modes through the use of a rear-panel selector switch: JBOD, Spanning, and RAID 0 (striping). In JBOD mode, the two drives are seen by the computer as two single volumes. In Spanning mode drives are seen as one large volume. When the first drive fills to the limit, data is then written to the second drive. RAID 0 (striping) is designed to increase the performance of the drive system. Drives are seen as one large volume, and the built-in RAID 0 controller distributes the I/O burden by reading and writing data from both drives at the same time. The back panel features four ports for multiple connectivity options - two FW800, one FW400, and one USB2.0. GT 062 comes standard with a three-year warranty that includes an Overnight Advance Replacement warranty in the first year.

miSAN V

miSAN V
miSAN is a disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) solution that incorporates tape virtualization for compatibility with off-the-shelf backup software. Any software that works with SCSI tape backup devices will work with miSAN-V. The virtual tape library support automates backup for days, weeks, or months without intervention. And, the exclusive offload feature allows you to attach an external tape drive or library for server-less archival to removable tape media.

The miSAN can be configured with up to 6TB of RAID 5 + hot spare capacity, with a tape drive. Tape formats available are AIT-3, AIT-5, and LTO-4. Seagate SATA II drives are used exclusively. Ethernet ports include two gigabit ports for data, and one gigabit port for management. The power supplies and drives are hot-swappable and redundant. The tape drive is removable for easy swap. Includes a web configuration utility.

miSAN supports most backup systems like Retrospect, Mezzo, Symantec Backup Exec and Net Backup, ARCserve, etc. The miSAN is operating System independent, with true block level capacity to heterogeneous hosts with common hardware. It supports iSCSI network attach and SCSI local attach with 200 MB/sec sustained transfer rate. Glyph tested and approved the free SNS iSCSI Initiator for Mac OS X, while Windows comes with an iSCSI Initiator pre installed.

Basement Tales

When inexpensive FireWire drives came along few years ago, people seemed to forget that quality does make difference. I mean, Fiat and Ferrari both have four wheels, come from the same country and even their names start the same letter but I guess you'll agree that there are some quality differences. Yes, they are both cars, but built for different purposes. Same story with hard disks, different disks are made for different purposes.

With cheap FireWire disks, you can waste lots of time and nerves to weird compatibility problems. Office grade disks from local discounter simply don't cut it in professional work due to cheap internal parts like incompatible FireWire bridge chipsets. And if you dare to ask about Pro Tools compatibility, the store rep usually thinks you're talking about a new game and tries to sell you a PS3. We're pretty sure you didn't buy your 2" tapes as no-name products from your local Denner either so why put your valuable work to the cheapest (dare we say crappiest...) data carrier available? It's like carrying all your savings in a plastic bag and go to east L.A. in the middle of the night waving a big sign "rob me please, I'm a tourist".

Many learned the hard way that cheap can be very expensive when you lose weeks of work so after the initial run to office-grade el cheapo drives, people started to seek a reliable storage solution and found Glyph. We could tell muchos hair-raising stories about people wasting thousands and thousands of francs because of "cheap" storage but let's not even go there. Let's stick to the good news which is that most of them changed to Glyph after few nasty crashes, some sooner, some later.
